What are oil paints? They are comprised of pigments ground with oils, most commonly linseed oil. The mixture of pigment and oil is dried to the consistency of butter, causing the applied paint to dry slowly without changes in color intensity.

Oil paint dates as far back as the 7th century.  It didn’t become a widely used medium in Europe until the 15th century, when Flemish painter Jan van Eyck created his oil paint formula.
