Derivan Cracking Medium

Derivan Cracking Medium lets you produce works that have that weathered and old country farm feel. To obtain a cracked look, there are three steps and three layers involved. The Cracking Medium is sandwiched between the two layers of different coloured Matisse Background colours.

Watch here as Steven and Eliza talk about how to use Derivan Cracking Medium

Step by Step Process

As with any technique, if you’ve never tried this before it is advisable to practice on some cardboard or scrap material first. The process is fairly straight-forward but requires some attention to the guidelines detailed below. Derivan Cracking Medium has been made to crack with Derivan Chalkboard Paint and Derivan Student Paint.  Other brands of paint may work with this medium; however, we cannot guarantee performance.

The Derivan Cracking Medium process relies on a reaction between the topcoat of Matisse background colour and the cracking medium that is applied below. To use, you will need to apply one layer of Matisse Background Colour, the colour that shows through as the cracks. Once that layer is dry, you then apply the cracking medium using a brush, sponge, or roller. Finally, you apply the third layer using a different colour Matisse Background Colour. It’s recommended to do the third layer within 12 hours of the cracking medium drying. Once the topcoat is applied, the cracking coat below becomes semi-liquid again and shrinks, taking with it the topcoat to result in the weathered paint look.

Please Note: Derivan Cracking Medium has been specially formulated to crack the Matisse Background Colours. Other brands of paint may work with this medium; however, performance cannot be guaranteed on these.
